Kampyr-Tepe

Introduction About Kampyr-Tepe

Located 30 km southwest of Termez, Kampyr-Tepe is one of the oldest archaeological sites. It is the ruins of the Termez and located on the Amu Darya River. Kampyr-Tepe is founded at the end of 4th century BC and was the territory of Macedonian, Graeco-Bactrian, and Kushan in the 1st and 2nd century AD, under the rule of Kanishka the Great.

After the conquest of Alexander the Great, Kampyr-Tepe Of Termez was abandoned and flooded by the Oxus, the name of Amu Darya River at that time.  Known as one of the iconic landmarks of Surkhandarya oasis, today, during Termez Tours, you can see the excavated city which is lying on the edge of a platform high above the river plain.

Famous as the most impressive archaeological site in the southern Uzbekistan, Kampyr-Tepe is 2500 years old and looks like a fort with the big civil buildings which were washed away in floods. As per the archaeologists, Kampyr Tepe had logistical functions.

It is the most interesting fact that the relics of Hellenism, Zoroastrianism, and Buddhism on the same time periods were co-existed. During the reign of Kushan Empire, the syncretism was grown and that’s why those periods were known as the Golden period.
