In the year 2009 the two more buildings to house the Museum of History and Ethnography and the Saparmurat Turkmenbashi Museum has added to the main building from both sides of it.
Built with a modern national architecture, the museum is decorated by tracery metal grids, decorative cornices and tinted stained glass windows by the use of granite, precious woods, bronze, facing materials from Turkey.
The exhibitions in 9 halls display Athens, Eros, silver gilded griffin, horn-shaped ivory vessels of rhinos of the Parthian era, gold jewelleries and medallions-stamps from Margiana, and Rodoguna, a Buddhist artefact. A fossilized piece of wood of the Paleozoic period, aged 270,000,000, dinosaurs’ footprints, an 820-kg meteorite, fallen in Kunya-Urgench can be found in this museum.
Ashgabat National Museum of History has the unique collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures of Turkmen fine arts and also the masterpieces of some Russian and Western European artists of 19th and 20th centuries. The collection includes early paintings, drawings, sculptures, carpets, rugs and fabrics in the exhibits.
