Dating back to 12th century, II Arslan Mausoleum is the oldest long survived momument in Kunya Urgench. The mausoleum is also known as the Mausoleum of Fakhreddin Razi, who was a great scientist, died in 1208. Kunya-Urgench, in the north-west of Turkmenistan and on the left of Amu Darya River and listed among the Turkmenistan UNESCO World Heritage Sites as it is an architectural reserve. In the 1st century AD, Kunya Urgench was the capital of Northern Khorezm, and a part of the Achaemenid Empire in the 1st century BC. During the second half of early 8th century, the city was captured by Arabs. In 995, Kunya Urgench became the residence of Khorezm Shah. Il Arslan was a powerful ruler of Khorezm or Khwarazam in the late 12th century and he has achieved many victories in his reign from 1156 to 1172. He had extended the border of his territory and conquered Bukhara and Samarkand in 1158. Later, he had also captured Nishapur, which is the northeast part of Iran today and other Khwarazmian cities in 1167.
Due to unable to pay annual tribute, the troops of Arslan II suffered a humiliating defeat by the neighboring Qara Khitai rulers. Arslan II has become sick and also unable to lead his troop. So, he left them in the command of a former rebel leader. As the commander has the weak battle tactics and performed poorly in battle, he was captured by the Qara Khitai. However, Il Arslan died the next year. After his death, Tekesh, the son of II Arslan who has consolidated power and established himself as the next ruler of Khwarazm. In the memory of his father, he built II Arslan Mausoleum with a curious zigzag brick pattern. This special kind of brick was exported to Samarkand by the help of Amir Timur.

As one of the unique Turkmenistan – Places Of Attractions, II Arslan Mausoleum is a cube with a 12-side drum prism on it. There is an external dome in the form of 12 side tabernacle. The structure of the building is similar to the Samanid mausoleum in Bukhara. But the roof has a cone shaped structure by the use of a wavy design of small blue tiles. There is a grave to the right of the building and another larger grave behind the building.
II Arslan Mausoleum is decorated with a relief carved terracotta represented as an intricate ornament in the vegetative and geometrical patterns. Decorated by a medieval technique, the raw bricks were covered with clay which was used for creating the most complicated ornament. The entire composition was cut in between the bricks and fired to make the ensemble.
