Namazgoh Mosque Overview

Namazgoh Mosque is located in the souh-west of Bukhara. It was a prayer area, intended for religious services in such holidays as Kurban-bairam and Ramazan-bairam. It was built in 19th century during the reign of the Samanids. There was not only worship but rites of sacrifice where meals were treated to all believers, regardless of their local status. The first religious educational institution was built during their reign, also there were built khanaki - shelters for wandering Sufi and namazgokh was on the out skirts of the city. History Of Namazgoh Mosque:

The word Namazgah Mosque Bukhara simply means Place of Prayer in Bukahara in Persian. The monument was established from 1119-20 during the Karakhanid period as an open-air mosque comprising a long, low wall measuring 38 meters in length and a single mihrab niche indicating the direction of Mecca. The mosque was further remodeled in the 16th century with the addition of arcades that were awkwardly affixed to the existing structure. However, now the monument stands in partial ruin and is located well to the south of the areas frequented by tourists as per Uzbekistan Travel Advice.

Namazgoh Mosque Design and Architecture:

Considering the architectural sense, it is open mosque, where large number of people can pray simultaneously. The brick wall with the length of 38 meters with special cavity mihrab was constructed instead of the garden. Mihrab in mosques directed to the Mecca. Later the wall was tiled with glazed terracotta. The mosque has the avian with three portals. For construction one of the walls, the bricks of primary construction were used. Ancient wooden minbar (pulpit) from where the imam read a khutba (sermon) was replaced with a brick minbar. Only part of the structure is preserved till our time.
