In Turkmenistan Tours, you can see Nadir Shah Fortress in a rectangular form and the walls have the length of one thousand meters and 3 metre in height, and surrounded by a large moat.

The front of Nadir Shah Fortress was functioned as a military garrison, whose main purpose was to control rebellious Turkmen tribes. During the suppression of the Astrabad revolt of the Turkmen, Nadir-Shah decided to protect the boundaries of his territory by means of building of a military fortress there.

In 18th century, Turkmenistan was divided by the Central Asian khanates and the Iranian Empire while the southern part of Turkmenistan belonged to Iran. In southern Iran, Nadir Shah, the future Great Iranian shah-commander was born. It is said that Nadir Shah, who was held as a slave in captivity in Khiva in the time of his youth, promised himself that one day he would move to Khiva to his homeland. After becoming a powerful leader, Nadir Shah conquered Khiva and took thousands of prisoners and ordering each of them to take soil from Khiva. With the soil, he constructed the fortress near the Kopet Dag Mountains. That’s why, Nadir Shah Fortress is also known as Old Khivabad.

Nadir Shah made history of the East by his numerous battle campaigns and was formed a large empire including Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan and part of Georgia, Belochistan, Khiva and Bukhara khanates as feudatory territories. In 1739, Nadir Shah seized Delhi which was the capital of the Great Mogul Empire. His ruling period was from 1736 to 1747. During his reign, he has built many fortresses and developed cities apart from owning the territories.
