The unique Meros Paper Mill is a great step towards reviving and continue the generations-old tradition of making paper. On your Samarkand Tours, you can also shop at the gift shop which is close to this and has a variety of ornaments, mini suzanis, and postcards all of which are created from paper from the mill. This Mill is a must-visit on your Uzbekistan Tours.
The process and technology used in the Meros Paper Mill in Samarkand are more intriguing than the product itself.
The process usually begins with combining silk fibers with a binding agent.
The bark of mulberry trees is used for preparing the silk paper at Meros. This is due to the long, soft fibers help create similar properties equivalent to that of silk.
In the Meros Paper Mill the, mulberry tree branches are cut into pieces t size of about two feet long.
After soaking them in basins of water for a day, the bark is then scraped off in long ribbons with a knife.
The bark is then boiled in a large vessel until it turns to a deep reddish-brown color.
Using a mill system the soft bark is then mashed as a thick tree trunk rotates around a pivot.
The resultant of this is a thick, clay-like substance, which is mixed into a rectangular wooden basin of water. This is followed by many other processes creating sheets of silk paper ready to use. You will witness this process on your Uzbekistan Tours.
The process and technology of producing silk paper in the Meros Paper Mill began in the 8th century AD. This was the ancient process of silk paper trade on the Silk Road across which many travelers passed traveling through Central Asia. During those times at least 20 people worked at the Meros factory and produced anywhere around 100 sheets of paper a day. On your Samarkand Tours, you simply cannot miss visiting this ancient mill of silk paper production.
