Overview About Khodja Akhrar Ensemble

Known as “the mirror of Sher-Dor”, Khodja Akhrar Ensemble was build near the burial place of Khodja Akhror, the leader of Naqshbandiya Sufi order. This madrassah along with the mosque represents the most beautiful Islamic architecture among the popular Samarkand Sights.

History Of Khodja Akhrar Ensemble

Mausoleum of Khodja Akhrar was built on the memory of Khodja Akhrar, the leader of the sufi order Naqshbandiya. He was not only the political leader and most influenced person of the region, but also the spiritual leader of many rulers at that time. The motto of Khodja Akhrar was to use political power to fulfil the spiritual mission.

Khodja Akhrar’s burial place was near Samarkand. The white grave stone and plenty of epitaphs became sacred cemetery and the main attractions of pilgrimage. In 1630 the Samarkand ruler Nodir Divan Begi in 1630 ordered to build Khoda Akhrar Ensemble near the grave of Khodja Akhror.

Khodja Akhrar Ensemble in Samarkand is located at south-western part of outside of Samarkand near the old cemetery Djakerdiza at Registan square.

Khodja Akhrar Ensemble Design and Architecture

Ensemble architectural Khodja Ahrar is actually a complex which includes Sher-dor madrassah, winter and summer mosques or Khoja Akhrar Vali Mosque, ayvan and minaret.

Khodja Akhrar Ensemble is known as Sher-dor madrassah because the portal or tympanum had images of two lions and two deer. The eastern facade is the main portal of the madrasah and made in a U-shaped frame decorated with a geometric pattern, also known as “Girih” and made of glazed bricks and stone mosaics. The base of the portal is a marble panel, or mosaic panels with a floral pattern.

The mosque made on the axis of the entrance portal with a portal-dome compositional structure. The square lies on a high cylindrical drum, is covered with a sphere-conical dome decorated with blue tiles.
