Constructed by Russian in 1869, Geok-Tepe Fortress was on the Caspian Sea shore as a base for the armies which are moving to Central Asia. As a former fortress of Turkmens in the oasis of Ahal near to the Ashgabat Vicinity, Goek-Tepe Fortress has got the place in Turkmenistan Tours. The fortress got its name from Russian language version of the Turkic name “Gökdepe” which means "Blue Hill" and in the Turkmen gök means "blue" while depe means “hills”.
As one of the Ashgabat – Top Places To Visit, Goek- Tepe Fortress also has a painful history. The first attack by Russian on the fortress was in August 1879 and lost the battle by Turkmen defenders. Goek-Tepe was attacked by 6000 Russians under General Mikhail Skobelev in December 1880. The siege of Geok Tepe lasted 23 days as the Russian forces broke the wall by detonating a mine in the dogged part of the wall in 12th January 1881. The Russian troops stormed in after the fortress was breached and thousands of defenders were killed in the initial explosion, and many more were killed in the fighting. The defenders, along with the 40,000 civilians inside the fortress were chased by General Skobelev's cavalry.
