Famous for its unique architecture and finishing of medieval period, Abu-Fazl Mausoleum, a small monument is listed as a major attraction in Turkmenistan Tours. Built in between 11th and 12th centuries above the tomb of Muslim mystic Abu-Fazl, the Mausoleum is located 300 meters to the south the powerful citadel of Old Serakhs. Abu Fazl was a high intellectual and respected Sufi sheikh. Also known as a mentor to Abu Said Meikhene, Abu-Fazl is popularly called as Serakhs Baba among the locals. After his death on 1023, the construction has begun in 1024 while the memorial inscription on the portal of the mausoleum was deciphered in 19th century. The inscription says "in the year out 1425 from Timurid dynasty by the order of Sultan Shahrukh the building was repaired, expanded and the portal was added". As one among the Ashgabat Top Places To Visit, the decoration by alabaster stalactites in the interiors and exteriors can be seen which were reconstructed during Timurid era.
As Serahks was under the Seljuk rule until 1035, the tomb inside the mausoleum has a Ghaznavid structure. The scholars also believe that the tomb was built at the end of the 11th century, during the Seljuk period. Though Abul-Fazl Mausoleum was heavily suffered by the Mongolians in 1221, it was reconstructed during Timurid era.
Founded on a high hill near to the Tejen River, the Old Sherakh city today is abandoned area. On excavations, the materials were found from the Parthian and Sasanian periods.
