Built in the honour of Abu Sa'id bin A'bil Khair (967-1049), the sufi scholar and poet, Abu-Said Mitkhene Mausoleum, also referred as mausoleum of Meana Baba in Turkmenistan Tours. As the sufi saint was a public figure in between 10th and 11th century and born in Meana village, Abu-Said was called as Meana Baba.
The great Sufi saint, Abu Said was born in 967 in the town of Meikhene, on the trade route between Abiverd and Scrakhs. As his father was an herbalist and spice trader, Abu Sa'id had received proper education. The scholar was famous for his asceticism, the detachment from every sensual pleasure and reciting verses of the Koran. After spells of the Koran verses in various cities, like, Merv, Serakhs and Nishapur, Abu Said was returned to Meikhene and died in 1049. Before his death, he had gained the popularity and also the respects from all including the leaders of different region. His religious activity was begun in Gazna, the capital of the Gaznevid state. His role and contribution in the political and spiritual life of the region was exceptional.
As one of the Sufi leaders of Islam, his advices were sought by the most of the Seljuk rulers like Chagry Beg and Togrul Beg. One of his miracles is the conversion of a piece of watermelon into the sum of 20 gold dinars when it accidentally dropped by him. On the victory in the battle at Dandanakan between Seljuks and Gaznevids for Khorasan in 1040, Abu-Said, right in the battle-field, declared Togrul Beg and his brother Chagry-Beg to be the Khorasan's rulers.
On Turkmenistan Tours, Abu-Said Mitkhene Mausoleum can be reached from Ashgabat to Mary road. Travelling from Dushak, you have to go south-east from Dushak and take a right turn and drive until the sign board to Meana Baba is not seen. After the sign board, you have to drive for 5 km to reach at the mausoleum.
As an example of Ashgabat Top Places To Visit, Abu-Said Mitkhene Mausoleum is a perfect example of medieval portal-domed structures. Built in the form of a cube in Ashgabat Vicinity, it has a faced, glazed ceramic portal while the inner premises are square in shape.
The immense renovation of its building, carried out early in the XIV century, changed considerably the decorative appearance of the mausoleum. One of the features of the mausoleum was a painting which covered the building's walls from top to bottom. The painting was made in blue and red colors which were also used in the mosaic pattern on the building's portal.
The entrance to Abu-Said Mitkhene Mausoleum is framed by a tall, arched portal. The repeated renovation of the building in the 14th century make it more beautiful including beautiful blue, turquoise and white mosaic tile work around the portal, based around geometric designs and Arabic inscriptions.
As one of the famous Ashgabat Sights, the interior painting has geometric and stylised floral designs on a white background with a repeated water-jug motif. The decoration on the interior of the dome is based around a central eight-pointed star.
